The History of Wentworth Mansion®

    1865 - 1887

In 1886, wealthy cotton factor, phosphate manufacturer, and shipping magnate Francis Silas Rodgers commissioned architect Daniel G. Waynes to design one of Charleston’s grandest private residences. Built in the Second Empire style at 149 Wentworth Street, the Mansion quickly became one of the city’s most remarkable architectural landmarks. Francis Silas Rodgers and his wife, Marie Elizabeth Cochran, raised their 13 children within its walls, establishing a family legacy that remains part of the Mansion’s enduring story today.

Members of the Rodgers’ family sell the home to the Scottish Rite Cathedral Association for $100,000. The Scottish Rite Masons keep the home until 1940, when it is sold to The Atlantic Coast Insurance Company. It serves as the company headquarters until 1996.

    1997

Purchased by Richard Widman in 1997, the Mansion underwent an extensive $7 million restoration that carefully preserved its Tiffany stained glass, hand-carved staircase, inlaid floors, marble fireplaces, and iconic cupola while introducing modern comforts, luxurious bathrooms, and thoughtful amenities. The result was a seamless transformation into one of Charleston’s premier luxury historic hotels, where extraordinary architecture and gracious Southern hospitality continue to define the guest experience.
