Charleston, South Carolina has been officially designated by the U.S. Congress and the America250 Commission as one of four national “lead cities” for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Alongside Philadelphia, New York, and Boston, Charleston was selected for its pivotal role in the American Revolution—serving as the wealthiest and largest city south of Philadelphia in the 18th century and a vital political and logistical center in the Southern colonies.
